Biography—Jon Ciemiewicz, New Hampshire Jon has been hooking rugs for the past 13 years and teaching for the last 8 years throughout the USA and Canada. His favourite subjects to hook are wild animals and Native Americans. Some of his rugs have been selected for inclusion in CELEBRATIONS; others have been displayed in juried museum shows and still others have been honoured by people’s choice awards in rug shows.

Dyeing Techniques with Basic Colour Theory with Barbie Baker DykensSuitable for First time or Experienced in DyeingWhether a first time dyer or a seasoned dyer wishing to review basic dyeing processes, you will experience an inspiring week of fourteen plus basic dyeing techniques and basic color possiblities studying both harmonious and contrasting color theories.
You will dye both new and recycled wools. Because this course is saturated with learning various dyeing techniques, you will have no time to hook in the classroom.
You will leave this course with a reference binder that you will use time and time again for future dyeing and color combinations. Plan for lots of fun and laughter plus lots of work during this course at Spring Rug School!
Biography—Barbie Baker Dykens, Nova Scotia Barbie Baker-Dykens, A.N.S.C.A.D., is a Nova Scotia craftsperson, artist, teacher, author and publisher. A graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Barbie has pursued an art career involving a variety of mediums including woven textures and sculptures, creating functional and sculptural forms in wool and/or leather, and painting with wool. She has taught classes in rug hooking and dyeing in the Maritimes and Ontario over the past fifteen years. Barbie has written and published eleven books of instruction on basic dyeing, techniques and color theory for rug hookers, weavers and knitters. ÌÌÌÌÌÌ Expressive Fine-Cut Pictorials with Jane Halliwell-Green, MarylandThis course is designed for Intermediate to Advanced LevelLearn how to enhance and embellish your pictorial wall hangings with new techniques found in Jane Halliwell Green's new book, “Pictorial Hooked Rugs.” Realistic trees, bushes, and cottage gardens with a special technique called pixelating will be demonstrated. Meandering, shagging, bundling, baby proddy and “meandering with a twist” will be new tools that you will take away from this course.
Learn how the use of yarn mixed with wool will create special effects in your project and discover which materials create the look of roofs, stone, rocks, tile, skies, sand ice, and skies. Jane will teach all the elements in a pictorial piece including buildings, mountains, snow, water and grass, to name a few. Jane's course is designed to give you a fresh perspective on this favourite style of hooked rug. Apply early to ensure that you are part of her fascinating journey in the creation of expressive fine-cut pictorials.
Biography—Jane Halliwell-Green, Maryland Jane Halliwell Green is a Pearl McGown certified instructor specializing in both fine-cut pictorial rugs and wide-cut florals referred to as “Close-ups. Jane was the first rug hooking instructor to be asked to teach at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and taught there for six years. She appeared on Home and Garden TV in 2000 and is the author of The Pictorial Rug published in 2000 and the recently released Pictorial Hooked Rugs. Jane has developed new techniques to use in hooking pictorial rugs including pixelating, shagging, and baby proddy. She is considered an expert in hooking water, skies, roads, buildings, and foliage and using unusual materials to create special affects in these rugs. ÌÌÌÌÌÌ Historical Grenfell Mats with Joan Foster, NewfoundlandSuitable for Intermediate Level HookingHook an “authentic” Grenfell design in the style used in Northern Newfoundland and Labrador in the early 20th century. Explore the Grenfell tradition with an instructor who has hooked for Grenfell Handicrafts. You may choose to hook the Grenfell pattern Bear Mat or Children Playing (10" x 12"), and I hope to have a third Grenfell pattern for you. Permission has been granted by Grenfell Handicrafts of St. Anthony to me to use these designs. Alternatively you may order one of my original northern designs, or bring your own, or use a commercial design of a northern style scene.
You will learn to remove color from and dye hosiery using Magic Carpet dyes as well as experiment with Kool-Aid. This is a fun approach to dyeing and no previous experience is required. There will be a $10 fee per student for hosiery and dyes for the dyeing experiments. Lots of pre-course consultation with your instructor is encouraged.
Biography—Joan Foster, Newfoundland Joan Foster, a retired community college instructor, is a 15 year member of the RHGNS and a member of ATHA. A founding member of the Rug Hooking Guild of Newfoundland and Labrador, Joan has served in several executive positions including President. She designs and sells patterns and custom-designed rugs. Joan is a certified rug hooking instructor who has taught many people to hook and currently enjoys teaching pictorials and hooking in the Grenfell style. Joan has taught workshops and rug schools across Canada. Her work has been exhibited widely and is part of several collections. She has won several awards including the Provincial Craft Council's Award for Technical Excellence as well as the Award for Preservation of a Traditional Craft Skill. Joan is most proud of her involvement with the RHGNL Heritage Hooked Mat Registry and the subsequent publication of a book featuring rugs from the Registry.
ÌÌÌÌÌÌ Let's Play with Shapes with Iris Simpson, Ontario Suitable for Beginning or Advanced LevelShapes are intriguing. Play with regular geometric shapes or abstract ones in a repeating design. Circles, squares and triangles may come to mind, but also consider spirals and stars, pinwheels and polka dots, snowflakes or a turtle's shell! Your imagination is your limit when you create an exciting rug, hanging or pillow.
You may wish to use an old quilt pattern, create an antique game board or go wild with using shapes in an unusual design with bright colours! Imagine a sky full of kites!
Or try a “florametric” with flowers or leaves alternating with squares. You may bring a pattern or learn to design your own using templates or a grid system. You may use any cut and you can be a beginning student or advanced hooker to enjoy this course. Biography– Iris Simpson, OntarioIris is an accredited teacher through the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild and is McGown certified. Iris recently graduated from St. Lawrence College with Fibre Arts/Traditional Rug Hooking certification. Iris has an extensive repertoire of rug hooking skills and has taught a wide variety of classes and workshops throughout Canada, the United States and England as well as at McGown Workshops in the US. She has been a very active participant in her Ontario Guild as well as in TIGHR and ATHA. With respect to teaching, Iris's modus operandi can be summed thusly: "Learn Lots, Have Fun!"
ÌÌÌÌÌÌ Open Class with Doris Norman, New Brunswick Suitable for almost all levels of experience
This open class offers a great opportunity to work on a new project or complete one already started. Any cut, from #3 to #8+ may be used on any design, original or purchased. Mini-lectures guarantee you will learn about various styles of rug hooking, as projects brought to class may be oriental, pictorial, geometric, floral, fruit, primitive, etc.
You will be learning and sharing with each other. Course will include information relating to design, colour, materials, and finishing. Resource books, photos, hooked items, hand-out information, templates will be in the classroom to help inspire and encourage you to work on your special project.
Biography - Doris Norman, New Brunswick Doris Norman is a skilled artisan who teaches rug hooking at schools and workshops across the United States and Canada. An accredited Nova Scotia Rug Hooking Guild and McGown teacher, Doris specializes in Celtic art, William Morris design, Mayan/Peruvian art, Jacobean/crewel, pictorial, stained glass, primitive fruit and realistic shading. Her work has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine, Rug Hooking Magazine, and Hook Me a Story by Deanne Fitzpatrick. Her artistic work is in the New Brunswick Beaverbrook Art Gallery's permanent collection as well as in several other collections.
ÌÌÌÌÌÌ Persnickety Primitives Suitable for beginners up to advanced levelsThere is more to primitive hooking than simple outline and fill. This class is all about the details that make for a better mat. Topics to be covered include colour planning, background techniques and lettering. We will also explore multi-cuts, manipulating plaids, the use of textured wools as well as finishing ideas.
Students may choose any commercial pattern or their own design, printed on the backing that is suitable for a #6 cut or larger.
All subject matter as well as family pets, primitive pictorials and antique florals are all welcome. Please remember this is a primitive hooking course. Your pattern should be the Reader's Digest version - bridged! Smaller width strips aren't prohibited but will only be used where necessary for a few intricate design details. Dive into your stash! Make your textured wools do the work.
Biography – Cherylyn Brubaker, Maine Cherylyn Brubaker is a former graphic designer with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art from the University of Connecticut. Cherylyn owns "Hooked Treasures" in Brunswick, ME.
